Does Detoxification Help You Heal?

Our bodies are made mostly of water. Most people know this.

But simply drinking plenty of water every day is – although vital - not enough to keep our bodies functioning optimally. We need to have the correct balance of water and electrolytes to create the electrical charge our cells need to work properly.

The term “detoxification” has become quite a trendy buzz word that people often use to herald the start of a colon, kidney or liver cleanse in an effort to neutralise the effects of too much eating and drinking over a holiday period, for example. And while there’s nothing wrong with these practices – in fact, they often have numerous active benefits - proper detoxification is a far more complex process aimed at bringing various aspects into harmony, namely: properly operating cell functions, proper fluid and electrolyte balance (cell hydration), proper organ and systems equilibrium and sufficient nutrients and “raw materials” obtained through a healthy diet.

Most of our health problems today stem from either deficiency or excess. We are either not getting enough of the right kinds of nutrients, or we are taking in too many of the wrong things, and not eliminating them efficiently. The resultant congestion causes a build up of toxins in our bodies, and many of the diseases and other health problems common in Western society today – from common colds to cancer – can be attributed to this suffocation of our cells and a depletion of our energy.

Embarking on a process of cleansing and detoxification can prevent, treat in part, or at least ease, some of our most common medical problems. When we remove toxins from our bodies, they start to heal and we can begin to function and thrive at a much higher capacity.

Complete detoxification is a process that can take several days, and you are likely to feel a little weak, tired and even unwell in the short term as the toxins begin working their way out of your system. For this reason, you should only attempt it when you can take time off from work.

You can support your body throughout detoxification by making sure you have plenty of nutrient-dense food available. Eat more fruit and vegetables, and drink more water (with lemon). It’s also advisable to consult a healthcare professional before embarking on the detoxification process to get answers to any questions you may have.
