Managing Chronic Diseases

When are you sick? And when do you have a chronic disease?

The U.S. National Centre for Health Statistics defines a chronic disease as one that persists for longer than 3 months. It is generally not prevented by vaccination or cured by medication. By this definition, 88 percent of Americans have a chronic health condition (as of 1998).

What Diseases are Classified as Chronic Diseases?

Some of the diseases that fall into this classification are as follows:

  • Cancer
  • Heart Disease
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy
  • Obesity
  • Haemophilia
  • Parkinson’s
  • Bipolar disorder

While this list is by no means exhaustive, what does that mean for the sufferers of chronic illnesses?

You are no doubt eager to find a cure for an illness that has plagued you for months – or even years. Chronic diseases can wear away at a sufferer, and can be hard on family, friends, and of course – on your finances.

A factor that we always look at is this: Can the symptoms of your chronic disease be lessened by your lifestyle choices?

For example, obesity, heart disease and certain types of diabetes can often be alleviated – even eliminated altogether – by changes in diet and lifestyle. Arthritis, too, can be prevented, by wise diet choices before the disease becomes too advanced.

As with any illness, catching it early offers the best chance of recovery or reversal. And to this end we try hard to work with the body to treat – and hopefully cure – the effects of chronic disease.

Natural remedies are an excellent way to treat illnesses without working against your body. Too many over-the-counter medications may treat the illness in the short-term, but activate a host of unpleasant side-effects in our bodies. And this is why we encourage patients to seek treatment as soon as symptoms present themselves, so as to give your body the best chance of healing itself.

Yes, chronic diseases can be treated. But often it involves you – the patient. It means doing things that may be out of your comfort zone to get your body into a state which allows it to heal.
