Why Should You Be Fasting?

Why Should You Be Fasting?

Like so many other relatively uncommon health practices, fasting often gets a bad rap. Fasting has been tagged as fanatical, bad for your health, and is said to have no scientific basis.

However, for decades, many naturopaths and wellness experts have supported the practice of fasting. Would you like to know the facts?

What Is Fasting?

One article defines fasting this way: “It's a natural process called autophagy (literally “self-eating”), and it’s the body’s system of cleaning house: Your cells create membranes that hunt out scraps of dead, diseased, or worn-out cells; gobble them up; strip ’em for parts, and use the resulting molecules for energy or to make new cell parts.”

It goes on to say, “Think of it as our body’s innate recycling program,” says Colin Champ, M.D., a board-certified radiation oncologist, assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and author of Misguided Medicine. “Autophagy makes us more efficient machines to get rid of faulty parts, stop cancerous growths, and stop metabolic dysfunction like obesity and diabetes.”

Fasting gives your body a total break from food and allows your system to focus on important things that it doesn’t always have the capacity for, such as repairs and maintenance. Basically, it gives your body the ability to self-heal – something that our bodies do incredibly well under the right circumstances.

What Are The Benefits Of Fasting?

There are many different ways of fasting, and these each will have a particular effect on the body. However, whatever your reason, we’re sure you’d like to know some of the benefits of fasting (self-healing):

  • Allows your body to remove toxins
  • Can result in healthy weight loss
  • Allows your body to be more responsive to leptin which tells you when you are full
  • Supports ketosis (a state where your body  burns your fat reserves and not the food you have eaten)
  • Reduces triglycerides (fatty blood)
  • Improves cell recycling
  • Decreases the accumulation of cellular damage which results in faster ageing

While we have only touched on the vast subject of self-healing, you can be sure that there are so many other benefits to overall wellness and cures for common ailments which lie within the practice of fasting.
